A one-day forum on the prevention of child labor abuse and online sexual exploitation is being considered for Cagayan de Oro City’s 80 barangay officials, said City Administrator Roy Hilario Raagas.

‘Barangay Gusa chairman Marlo Tabac being the vice chairman of the Liga Ng Mga Barangay Federation in Cagayan de Oro, we will propose that we replicate the forum on child labor abuse and online sexual exploitation of minors to raise awareness among our barangay officials,’ Atty. Raagas said during the Sept. 26 flag-raising program at City Hall.

Raagas said City Hall department managers attended a recent stakeholders summit for inter-agency councils on the prevention of child labor abuse and online sexual exploitation of minors in Manila. The summit is spearheaded by the group World Vision and the US Department of Labor.  ‘Cagayan de Oro City and Quezon City are two pilot areas for this project,’ Raagas said.

The three pilot barangays for the project are Gusa, Cugman and Puntod, Raagas said. ‘These barangays are noted for their child labor issues with Puntod being near the port area.  But through the efforts of the Community Improvement Division, City Social Welfare Office and City Health Office, we managed to reduce the incidence of child labor so more children can attend school and acquire basic education,’ he said.
