The voting population under the Persons with Disabilities (PWD) sector in Zamboanga City will have accessible polling places in the different precincts during the May 9 national and local elections.
At least 50 volunteer-PWD coordinators will be assigned in the different voting precincts citywide.
This was made possible by the Persons with Disabilities Affairs Unit (PDAU) under the City Social Welfare and Development Office and the Zamboanga City PWD Federation (ZCPWDFeD) in close coordination with the Commission on Election (COMELEC) for the provision of the PWDs polling places for the forthcoming elections.
This is in compliance to the provisions of RA 10366 of 2012 which authorizes the Commission On Elections To Establish Precincts Assigned To Accessible Polling Places Exclusively For Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) And Senior Citizens (SC) in the May 9, 2022 polls.
This is also reiterated under COMELEC Resolution 10108 (2016) General Principle which states: “In accordance with R.A 7277, as amended, and R.A 10366, the Commission shall be guided by the following principles in implementing this rule: The Commission shall ensure that voting procedures, facilities and materials are appropriate, accessible, and easy to understand and use, and that reasonable accommodation shall be granted to PWD and SC voters in order to fully exercise their right to suffrage.
The PWD Sector in Zamboanga City is all set to welcome the new national and local officials who will be elected into office and will assume posts on June 30, 2022. (Henry Salac | CSWDO-PDAU)
