The City Government of Zamboanga, through the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) -Office of Senior Citizen Affairs (OSCA) kicked off the Elderly Filipino Week celebration Monday, October 7 at the Grand Astoria Hotel.
Themed “Senior Citizens – Building the Nation, Inspiring Generations,” the Elderly Filipino Week celebration is held every first week of October, based on Proclamation No. 470 issued by former President Fidel V. Ramos in 1994. It highlights the vital role that senior citizens play in shaping communities, preserving traditions, and inspiring future generations.
This year’s event featured a solo singing and folk-dance competition, along with the search for Super Lolo and Super Lola 2024. Health-related concerns for senior citizens were also discussed.
Mayor John Dalipe, represented by Councilor Jerome Santos, underscored the city’s commitment to senior citizens and highlighted the various services provided by the city for the elderly sector. “Today we are celebrating the lives and legacy of one of the city’s pillars, our senior citizens. You are the guardians of our history and the connection between the generations.”
Vice Mayor Josephine Pareja, represented by Jainal Sabdani, keynoted the event, emphasizing the importance of the elderly in building stronger communities. “Your life experiences, your challenges, and your triumphs serve as lessons.”
“You are living examples of our strength, faith and commitment that lead to meaningful lives and stronger communities. The inspiration you provide is essential in ensuring that these values remain the core of our city’s future. Your contribution remains vital, and we will continue to support policies that honor and protect your rights and well-being,” the vice mayor added.
Also present during the event were Executive Assistant Edna Sumergido, CSWDO Head Ma. Socorro Rojas, CSWDO Assistant Head Uldarico Fabian, Josefina Lacastesantos representing FSCAP President Maria Magdalena Marcos, OSCA Head Jorge Camins, Former OSCA Heads, OSCA Geriatric Specialist Dr. Cathy Usman, and senior citizens from the seven field offices.
