Davao City – Some Holy Week activities in Davao City will be conducted online while mass gatherings on beaches are not allowed, as COVID-19 cases in the country continue to rise.

Davao City Mayor Inday Sara Duterte on Monday, March 29, during her ‘Special Hour’ program on Davao City Disaster Radio, announced that public mass gatherings such as processions and beach activities are not allowed during the observance of Holy Week to contain the spread of the coronavirus disease.

“Gina-discourage nato ang pagtapok sa mga tao dihna sa mga public places during the long Holy Week. Kung aduna mo’y social events and activities make sure nga limited sya to the same household members. Kung aduna mo’y social events nga nakaschedule sa gawas, limit it to 25 individuals,” Duterte said.

According to Duterte, a gathering of more than 25 individuals in public places is considered a mass gathering, which is not allowed under the existing city ordinance.

Still, as a general rule for social events, individuals aged 15 years and below, and 65 years old and above are not permitted to participate in those activities.

Duterte also reminded the public that only up to 50% of sitting capacity is allowed in places of worship like churches.

Duterte announced that there will be no ‘Visita Iglesia’ on Thursday, however, live streaming of the Blessed Sacrament after the evening Mass of the Last Supper will be conducted, instead. There will also be no washing of the feet during the mass, she added.

The Way of the Cross will also be suspended on Friday as well as well as the kissing of the cross in the afternoon.

Duterte said that the procession of Christ’s image and Madre Dolorosa will be allowed provided that no mass gathering will happen.

On-site activities during Holy Week such as Blessing of the Fire on Saturday and ‘Sugat’ or ‘Salubong’ on Sunday will not be allowed.

“We have to amend because we have expectations because of the surge dinha nga nagapanghitabo sa NCR ug sa Cebu,” Duterte explained.

Meanwhile, Duterte signed on March 29, the Executive Order (E.O.) No. 19 Series of 2021 or also known as “An Order for Closure of All Beaches, Beach Resorts And Other Inland Water Resorts On April 1, 2, 3, and 4, 2021 In Davao City”.

She reiterated that “all individuals are prohibited from gathering in beaches and inland resorts during the long holiday weekend for Holy week.”

E.O. 19 directed the closure of all beaches, beach resorts, and inland water resorts starting April 1 to 4, 2021.

In her E.O., Duterte cited the successive incidents involving minors violating the general community quarantine (GCQ) and who drowned while swimming in bodies of water and the need to prevent these incidents during the long holiday from classes on April 1 to 4.

“Kaning mga children and youth naa ni sila’y tendency nga manggawas kay wala sila’y schoolwork (These children and youth, they tend to go outside because they don’t have schoolwork),” Duterte said.

The Public Safety and Security Command Center (PSSCC) will also coordinate with the Davao City Police Office (DCPO), Task Force Davao (TFD), the Philippine Navy (PN), the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) and other units of the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to implement this order, it said.

“Davao COVID-19 Task Force is working hard to prevent a second wave of the surge in COVID-19 cases, mass gatherings, mao na sya’y cause nga pasapas ang takdanay. So, we need to prevent mass gatherings in beaches and inland water resorts during the long holiday weekend (Davao COVID-19 Task Force is working hard to prevent a second wave of the surge in COVID-19 cases, mass gathering is one of the causes of rapid transmission of the virus. So, we need to prevent mass gatherings in beaches and inland water resorts during the long holiday weekend),” Duterte said
