A powerful message of excellence, integrity, and pride marked the official opening of the Palarong Bicol 2026 on March 1, 2026, at the Bicol University Sports Complex in Legazpi City.
Ako Bicol Party-list Rep. Alfredo “Pido” Garbin, Jr. delivered the keynote address during the opening ceremony of the week-long regional sporting event, rallying thousands of Bicolano student-athletes to embrace not only competition but character.
“Play with excellence, compete with honor and represent your communities with pride. Win with humility, loss with grace, celebrate others’ success and never forget, the greatest prize here is not the medal or the trophies, but the person you become through the process,” Cong. Pido Garbin emphasized in his message.
In his speech, Cong. Pido Garbin extended his gratitude to education officials led by DepEd Bicol director Gilbert Sadsad, representative from DepEd Central Office Neneth Alama, and Legazpi City Schools Division Superintendent Danilo Despi, as well as the various school superintendents present, for their continued commitment in molding the youth not only in sports but also in discipline, character, and ambition.
He also acknowledged the support of Dr. Baby Boy Benjamin D. Nebres III for hosting the opening ceremony, and commended the Local Government of Legazpi City under the leadership of Mayor Hisham Ismail for successfully hosting the event for the fourth consecutive year.
The lawmaker likewise recognized the presence and support of LGU officials who were present during the opening day.
Cong. Pido Garbin underscored that sports play a crucial role in nation-building, stressing that Palarong Bicol is not merely a competition but a training ground for discipline, integrity, unity, and teamwork – values essential not only in sports but also in life and public service.
“To our athletes, you carry more than your team colors – you carry the hopes of your schools, your families and your communities. Every early morning run, every sacrifice, and every decision to train over comfort are already victories that will serve you long after this week ends,” he said.
He also paid tribute to coaches, trainers, parents and supporters for their vital role in shaping disciplined young leaders who persevere and respond with dignity in both victory and defeat.
As the region’s premier athletic meet unfolds, Palarong Bicol 2026 stands as a celebration of the talent, resilience, and promise of Bicolano youth – reminding all that the future of the region and the nation rests in young individuals who possess discipline, dreams, and strong moral character.
