The City Government of Iriga formally commemorated the 129th Anniversary of the Martyrdom of Dr. Jose P. Rizal on December 30, 2026, through a solemn program that honored the national hero’s life, teachings, and enduring legacy, guided by this year’s national theme: “Sa Pagbangon ng mga Mamamayan, Aral at Diwa Mo ang Tunay na Gabay.”
The commemoration brought together city officials, department heads, barangay leaders, educators, youth representatives, and members of various sectors, underscoring the collective commitment of Irigueños to uphold Rizal’s ideals of patriotism, education, and responsible citizenship.
The commemoration officially began with a Holy Mass followed by a wreath-laying activity and messages highlighting Rizal’s wisdom and relevance in contemporary governance and community development.
In his message, Mayor Rex C. Oliva emphasized that Rizal’s teachings on education, civic participation, integrity, and love of country continue to guide the City Government of Iriga in its pursuit of participative, consultative, and inclusive governance.
According to Mayor Rex, the city’s programs particularly in education, social services, youth development, and community engagement are grounded on Rizal’s belief that national progress begins with an informed, empowered, and united citizenry. He stressed that Iriga’s development initiatives are shaped through dialogue, sectoral consultations, and active citizen participation to ensure that no one is left behind.
The program was further given significance by the presence of the event’s guest of honor from the Philippine Coast Guard, Commodore Ivan E. Roldan, PCG, who was represented during the event by Captain Alejandro Arica, Deputy Commander of the Philippine Coast Guard whose representation highlighted the shared responsibility of institutions and communities in nation-building and public service.
