In line with the global observance of World Safety Day, the Department of Health Bicol Center for Health Development (DOH Bicol CHD) spearheaded the “World Safety Day for the Implementation of Healthy Workplaces” on April 30, 2026, in Naga City, Camarines Sur.

The event brought together key stakeholders across the region to reinforce the importance of safe and health-promoting work environments.

For many Bicolanos, fatigue, stess, and even illness have quietly become part of the everyday work routine, often carried home long after office hours. This reality set the tone for the Department’s clear message: this should not be the norm.

To address this, DOH Bicol convened local chief executives’ representatives, human resource management officers, employees’ association representatives, partner agencies, and health advocates. By bringing together these sectors, the initiative aimed to ground the concept of healthy workplaces in the experiences of the working class.

More than just preventing workplace accidents, the discussion expanded to include health risks that are often overlooked. These include chronic back pain due to poor posture, prolonged stress leading to burnout, and the increasing incidence of lifestyle-related diseases.

In her keynote message, OIC Regional Director Dr. Rosa Maria B. Rempillo underscored that addressing occupational health risks is not optional but essential to building a resilient and productive workforce. Her message reinforced the need for institutions to take a proactive role in safeguarding employee health.

Complementing these principles into action, participants were introduced to practice simple and achievable workplace interventions. These included promoting proper ergonomics, encouraging regular movement throughout the day, and developing policies that prioritize employee wellness.

Further strengthening the initiative, a session on Social and Behavior Change Communication (SBCC) highlighted the role of effective communication in shaping healthier behaviors among employees. Participants were also informed about available health support systems, including PhilHealth YAKAP, reinforcing that accessible assistance is available when medical needs arise.

As a concrete expression of commitment, participants took part in the ceremonial signing of the FITool 1: Formalize Intention Tool. This symbolized the pledge of participating institutions to adopt and implement workplace policies and programs that promote health and safety.

Ultimately, DOH Bicol CHD called on both employers and employees to uphold health and safety as a shared responsibility. Creating a healthy workplace, the Department emphasized, is not merely about compliance, it is about valuing the people who serve and sustain communities every day. Source: DOH Bicol CHD
