Reaffirming its commitment to enhancing the productivity and sustainability of tilapia farming, BFAR 5, through the Fisheries Production and Support Services Division (FPSSD) and in collaboration with the BFAR – National Freshwater Technology Center (NFTC), conducted a Trainer’s Training on Tilapia Broodstock Development from April 2-4, 2025, at the RFTFCD Training Hall in Tabaco City.

The training, attended by BFAR 5 technical personnel, Technology Outreach Station (TOS) Farm Managers, and representatives from local government units and the private sector, focused on improving broodstock management to strengthen resilience and efficiency in aquaculture practices.

In his message, Regional Director Ariel Pioquinto emphasized that the long-term sustainability of tilapia aquaculture is key to ensuring a consistent and reliable food source. He also expressed his vision of achieving a 20% increase in the region’s target tilapia production through this initiative.

Moreover, Atty. Nilo Consuelo, FPSSD Chief, stated that 50% of the success of tilapia culture relies on good broodstock development and management. He further emphasized that the training is essential for enhancing the skills of farm managers, enabling them to adapt to emerging technologies in tilapia farming. This initiative aims to achieve a 12% contribution from the aquaculture sector in the region. Additionally, Atty. Consuelo extended his well wishes to the participants and reminded them that the training plays a crucial role in the future of the region’s tilapia industry.

Dr. Ma. Jodecel C. Danting, Center Chief of the National Freshwater Fisheries Technology Center (NFTC), led discussions on the Philippine Tilapia Industry Plans and Programs during the training. Archebald M. Viliente Jr., Aquaculturist I from the Tilapia Broodstock Development and Production Section (TBDPS), followed with a presentation on tilapia broodstock development and management. He underscored the importance of proper broodstock management in ensuring the production of high-quality tilapia fingerlings, which serve as the foundation of successful aquaculture. Dr. Milagros M. Apaga, Senior Aquaculturist and Head of TBDPS, discussed the salinity tolerance of improved tilapia breeds, while Rosanna H. Cinense, Aquacultural Technologist, covered fish nutrition and feed formulation for tilapia.

The discussions were followed by a hands-on practicum at Buhi Farm, where Edwin N. Cinense led participants in harvesting and collecting eggs, fry, and fingerlings. The session also covered tilapia anesthetization, fish marking, and gonad identification.

This initiative also aims to equip individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively train others in the principles and practices of maintaining healthy and productive tilapia broodstock, contributing to the region’s sustainable aquaculture development.
