Around 100 healthcare practitioners, including nurses and doctors, and nursing students from different schools in Rinconada participated in the English Communication Skills Training held on February 21, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Iriga City Sports Center.

The training was conducted in partnership with Occupational English Test (OET) Philippines, a specialized English language proficiency exam designed specifically for healthcare professionals. Unlike International English Language Testing System (IELTS), which is a general English test, OET focuses on real-life medical scenarios and workplace communication.

The session featured distinguished speakers, including Mr. Ian Cortez, Regional Director for OET in Southeast Asia and Pakistan. With 17 years of experience at the British Council and a Master’s degree in Innovation and Business from the Asian Institute of Management, Cortez emphasized the importance of confident communication in healthcare and encouraged Filipino medical professionals to pursue global opportunities.

Also present was Ms. May Sevilla-Miclat, Education Specialist for OET Philippines. Holding a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Teaching and a TESOL certification, she shared insights on clinical communication and purposeful language use. Her extensive experience in education and nationwide teacher training further enriched the learning experience of participants.

The activity was led by the Public Employment Service Office (PESO) headed by Peso Manager Engr Cynthia Audal and the City Health Office headed by City Health Dr. Ronald G. Pereña and Asst. City Health Officer Dr. Cindy Tagomata-Villareal. It aimed to strengthen participants’ English communication skills and prepare them for greater professional opportunities both locally and abroad.

Mayor Rex who was represented by the Executive Secretayr Ailyn Alferez underscored that strong communication skills not only improve patient care but also enhance the global competitiveness of Iriga’s healthcare workforce. This reaffirms the City Government’s commitment to professional development and capacity-building initiatives.
