The Provincial Government of Davao De Oro has begun the initial steps towards early economic recovery in the province through providing financial and technical support to the local agricultural sector.
This recent development in the province was achieved since a considerable bulk of the economic activity in Davao De Oro is based on agriculture, prompting the provincial government to allocate approximately
₱ 40-million for the early recovery measures targeted towards agriculture and local farmers.
Davao De Oro Governor Jayvee Tyron Uy, in Monday’s Laging Handa Network Briefing with Presidential Communications Secretary Martin Andanar, cited as an example of how the said economic recovery measures undertaken by the provincial government has had a positive effect on the livelihood of rice farmers in Davao De Oro.
“The provincial government has extended to our rice farmers fertilizers, rice inputs so that we can expect an early harvest,” Uy said.
Usually, the harvest season for rice in the said province is from September to November but because of the Quick Turn Around Project for Rice Production, Davao De Oro rice farmers are expecting to harvest approximately 1,000 hectares of rice crops by late August. This means that farmers will be able to reap the benefits of an early harvest despite the economic difficulties posed by the Covid-19 pandemic nationwide.
“We observed during the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) period, we had difficulties in looking for sources for rice this is why, as part of our strategy, we helped our marginalized farmers which would in-turn help in food security,” Uy added.
According to the Provincial Agriculture Office, aside from the quick turn-around project, more than 11,000 hectares of rice land are on their vegetative, and reproductive/heading stage in time for the regular harvest season.
Governor Uy also highlighted how the provincial government prioritized the distribution of planting materials for vegetables to promote the various programs of the National Government while also prioritizing food security and proper nourishment in each household within Davao De Oro.
“We also distributed vegetable seeds in support of the different programs of the government such as the Brigada Eskwela, Gulayan sa Paaralan, Liwanag sa Pamilya Program, and to mothers of undernourished children to that they can plant in their backyards to attain food security,” Uy said.
