The Philippine Coast Guard evacuated on Monday at least 200 residents residing in two island villages near the restive Taal Volcano that have been declared a “no man’s land.”

The forced evacuation was carried out by Coast Guard personnel along with local disaster and Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) personnel following the reported “abnormal activities” of the volcano.

A news statement from the Coast Guard said the residents were inhabiting Taal Island near the volcano, which should not have been inhabited in the first place since it has been previously declared as a no man’s land.

The Coast Guard said Taal exhibited abnormal seismic activities on Monday, prompting officials to raise Alert Level 1 on Taal.

The evacuation and abnormal activities of Taal were confirmed by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) in a separate news statement issued on Tuesday.

“This order is for precautionary measure done in line with the recent activities of the volcano,” the NDRRMC said, adding the residents evacuated were from Sitios Tabla and San Isidro in Talisay.

Aside from the evacuation, the Coast Guard also inspected the areas near and surrounding the volcano.
