BACOLOD CITY — Three green sea turtles were rescued and released by personnel of the Sagay Marine Reserve after they were found trapped inside a fish corral along the coast of Brgy. Taba-ao early Thursday, Dec. 4.
In a post on its social media page, the Sagay City government said the rescue team responded at around 2:35 a.m. and discovered three turtles — two females and one male — estimated to weigh 150 kilograms, 50 kilograms, and 50 kilograms, respectively.
The animals were inspected on-site to assess their condition and check for possible injuries.
After confirming that all three turtles were healthy, the team released them back into the sea.
The incident was reported by Matias Sayon, with additional coordination from Barangay Captain Joy Vasquez.
Those who assisted in the operation include Felisa Sayon, owner of the fish corral; Barangay Tanod RM Magbato; Genesis Pialante; Roberto Cabalquinto; Romeo Hermosa; SK Chairperson Jhon Mark Caraballe; Ruel Magbato; and Teodoro Bacalso Jr.
Green sea turtles are a protected species in the Philippines, and marine reserve personnel regularly urge coastal communities to report trapped or stranded marine wildlife to reduce injuries and improve survival.
Protected Area Superintendent Mayo Antonio Cueva reminded the public to immediately report any sightings of stranded or trapped marine wildlife to ensure their safety and proper handling.
Barangay Captain Joy Vasquez also thanked the community for their prompt report and for supporting the Sagay Marine Reserve’s call to protect marine wildlife by ensuring the turtles were safely released. (Dolly Yasa via tdg photo by tdg)
