Bacolod City – Starting June 9, a “car-free Sunday” scheme will be implemented in Bacolod City, according to Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez.

Every Sunday, from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m., vehicles are prohibited from a 1.2 kilometer stretch of Lacson Street, from Ramos North Drive to South Capitol Road.

In a statement issued by the Bacolod City Public Information Office, walking, biking and other community related activities are encouraged.

This is part of the City’s Environment Month initiatives, in promoting good air quality and raising public awareness on the benefits of walking, jogging, running and cycling, as substantial ways to travel.

We encourage everyone to move more, be physically active, and engage in age and health appropriate exercises, aligning with the Philippine National Guidelines on Physical Activity, it added.

This will also be a big contribution to minimize the effects of climate change, according to Benitez. (Gilbert Bayoran via The Visayan Daily Star)
