Hundreds of Zamboangueños will converge to advocate for breast cancer awareness as the city joins the observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month which will kick off today, October 6, with the Pink October Walk.

Spearheaded by the Local Council of Women in partnership with the Mindanao Breast Cancer Support and Empowerment Association (MBSCEA) and the Gender and Development (GAD) Service of the Office of the City Mayor, the Pink October Walk, dubbed Walk With Hope for a Cause, will start at 4 PM, from Ledesma Street fronting the City Fire Station to Paseo del Mar.

The activity will culminate with a simple program, to be graced by Mayor John Dalipe and other local officials, highlighting the ongoing campaign to raise awareness about the impact of breast cancer and stressing the importance of solidarity and support within and amongst the community.

Pink October or Breast Cancer Awareness Month is observed every October and is focused on raising awareness on breast cancer. This year, the local theme for the observance is “#H.O.P.E: Building Awareness, Connecting Communities and Igniting Hope”.

In addition to the Pink October Walk, other highlights for the month-long commemoration are the free breast screening and consultation at 9am on Oct. 13, 20 and 27 at the East Wing, KCC Mall; Pink Reels: an online video advocacy campaign (inter-government competition) with Oct. 20 at 5pm as the deadline for submission of entries via facebook; Pink Digital Poster-making contest (exclusive for Junior High School students) with deadline for submission of entries set on Oct. 20 at 5pm; and Pink Media Information Caravan for members of the Zamboanga media.
