CLAYGO, which stands for “clean as you go” policy, is now an ordinance in Zamboanga City, mandating people across all sectors to clean up their waste before going anywhere, or else suffer the penalty of P1000 for the 1st offense, P2000 for the 2nd offense and P3000 for the 3rd and subsequent offenses.

Mayor John Dalipe signed Ordinance No. 713 titled “An Ordinance Advocating Cleanliness and Environmental Responsibility through Mandating and Institutionalizing the Clean As You Go (CLAYGO) Policy in all Food Establishments within the Jurisdiction of Zamboanga City.”

A joint initiative of Councilors Vicente Guingona, El King Omaga, Al-Jihan Edding and Charlie Mariano as principal authors, the ordinance enjoins the public to adopt cleanliness and hygiene practices, uphold high standards of cleanliness and hygiene in food establishments as such is vital for protecting public health and maintain Zamboanga City’s reputation as a top destination for safe and quality dining experiences.

By embracing the CLAYGO principle, people going to and from food establishments, such as restaurants, cafeteria, canteen, coffee shops/cafes, eateries and fastfood chains, will contribute to a culture of responsibility and cleanliness; thus, fostering a cleaner environment and enhancing the overall experience in the city. It also covers bakeries, refreshment parlors, schools and public places, where food and drinks are served/sold with a dine-in service.

These establishments are mandated to install and display signage and other promotional materials on CLAYGO practices and proper ways of waste segregation, especially in areas where customers dine-in in a clear and legible manner. Hand-washing facilities should also be made available to customers.

The edict also calls for the creation of the CLAYGO Board tasked with specific functions under the leadership of the city mayor as chairperson and co-chaired by the vice mayor. Representatives from various offices/agencies concerned are members of the Board.

Furthermore, the CLAYGO Ordinance encompasses the Solid Waste Management Ordinance, Anti-Littering Ordinance, and the Night Market Ordinance.-(Vic Larato)
