Zamboanga City has recorded a total of 118 fire incidents since January this year, marking a 15% decrease compared to 140 incidents in the same period last year.

Fire Chief Inspector Jacqueline Ortega told the virtual presser last Friday that the biggest conflagration recorded this year in terms of cost of damage to property was that of the WMSU Laboratory amounting to P15 million.

In terms of damage to households, she said the biggest fire was that in Recodo last Oct 13, where 400 houses went up in smoke, rendering 523 families homeless.

At least seven people were injured in the different fire incidents from January to the present, according to FCI Ortega. She added that the most common cause of fire outbreaks was electrical short circuits. (Vic Larato)
