Zamboanga City – The City Government through the Office of the City Environment and Natural Resources (OCENR) spearheaded a mangrove planting activity in barangay Mampang Thursday morning in celebration of Earth Day, marking the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970.

Mangrove propagules, courtesy of the City Government, were planted in the 800-square meter open space that used to be part of the transitory site for IDPs in Masepla, Mampang.

Three (3) cause-oriented organizations – Zamboanga City Government Employees Cooperative (ZCGEMPCO); JCI Zamboanga City La Bella and Mi Ciudad de Zamboanga “De aton este” participated in the activity.

The mangrove planting activity formed part of the city’s coastal area project enhancement, specifically mangrove forest in restoring its ecological functions, such as mitigating the impact of climate change among others.

This year’s theme is “Restore the Earth” that emphasizes that “a Clean Environment Is Essential for Healthy Living: The more you don’t care about our environment, the more it will become polluted with contaminants and toxins that have a harmful impact on our health. Air pollution can cause respiratory diseases and cancer, among other problems and diseases.”

Restoration is imperative to fighting climate change and making the Earth a safer, healthier, and more equitable place to live. It’s time to step up. It’s time to make a change.
