As the initial preparations for the upcoming Gawad Kalasag begin, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) of Surigao del Norte is geared up to ensure that everything is in place for another historic milestone, with the orientation taking shape last March 27, 2023.

With the sincere desire of Governor Robert Lyndon Barbers to elevate the province to the top this year, the PDRRMO is leaving no stone unturned in preparing the pertinent requirements for the prestigious award.

Indeed, the team is working hard to ensure that Surigao del Norte is fully equipped with the necessary resources and measures to withstand any contingency that may come its way.

Kalasag, which stands for Kalamidad at Sakuna Labanan, Sariling Galing ang Kaligtasan, is an annual awards program that recognizes outstanding contributions and initiatives in the field of disaster risk reduction and management. The legal basis for this award is Republic Act 10121, otherwise known as the Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act of 2010.

As a province that is no stranger to natural calamities, Surigao del Norte understands the importance of disaster preparedness and risk resilience.

Fully committed to preparing the province for any eventuality, the Gawad Kalasag is a testament to their dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of the people of Surigao del Norte.

With initial preparations underway, the team is confident that they will meet and exceed the expectations of Governor Barbers and the rest of the province when the ceremony takes place.

As the old saying goes, “Prevention is better than cure.” By prioritizing disaster preparedness and risk resilience, Surigao del Norte is taking the necessary steps to prevent disasters before they happen, and the Gawad Kalasag is a fitting recognition of their efforts.

Gov. Barbers exuded strength and confidence, embodying the spirit of resilience that is so essential in times of crisis. His words were a call to action, a challenge to all to join him in the fight for preparedness and safety. And as he spoke, it was clear that he was not just a leader, but also a hero – a true champion of the people.

Governor Barbers and his team have shown us that, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles, we can overcome. They have shown us the power of collaboration, innovation, and community empowerment. And as we look to the future, we must draw strength from their example, and commit ourselves to creating a safer, more resilient world for all.

In the words of the Governor himself: “We are not just fighting for ourselves, we are fighting for the future of our province, our country, and our planet.” Let us stand with him and his fellow DRRM practitioners, and join them in the fight for a brighter, safer, and more secure world. (Glen P)
