SAN MIGUEL Beer didn’t give Converge breathing in a 114-96 victory in Game 1 on Wednesday of their best-of-three quarterfinals showdown in the Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner’s Cup at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.

The fifth-seeded Beermen went full throttle in the first two quarters for a 55-32 lead at the half before pushing their advantage to as many as 80-49 midway the third period.

They controlled the entire game to avenge their previous loss to the fourth-seeded FibeXers, 102-106, last October 21.

“Our players played good defense. We practiced so hard for two days and we really prepared for their three-point shooting and running game,” San Miguel Beer deputy coach Jorge Gallent said. “I commend the players for doing what’s right, that’s why we got the win today.”

Gallent is now 5-0 since temporarily subbing for head coach Leo Austria who’s still under health protocols.

CJ Perez posted 25 points while import Devon Scott tallied nine of his 23 points in the last quarter in addition to his 12 rebounds and five assists to lead San Miguel Beer.

June Mar Fajardo had 19 points and 16 rebounds while Terrence Romeo and Marcio Lassiter added 13 and 11 points, respectively.

Simon Enciso issued 10 assists and contributed eight points also for the Beermen, who limited Converge’s import Quincy Miller to just nine points in the first half.

Miller erupted for 32 of his 41 points in the second half and also had 13 rebounds.
