Red Warriors make mincemeat of Soaring Falcons in UAAP men’s volleyball

UNIVERSITY of the East (UE) marked the return of University Athletic Association of the Philippines men’s volleyball action after a three-year pandemic hiatus of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 85 with a rout of Adamson University, 25-18, 25-22, 25-14, Saturday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

JM Andaya and Kenneth Culabat led the Red Warriors’ onslaught with 14 points apiece with Culabat adding 16 excellent receptions and seven digs.

Lloyd Josafat, who just returned from the Taiwan training camp of the national team Saturday, was inserted starting late in the second set and delivered 10 points on eight attacks, a block and an ace.

“We were hands on in the final stretch of our preparations because Lloyd [Josafat] and Coach Jerome [Guhit] were not with the team,” said UE assistant coach Ronwald Dimaculangan, who stepped in for Guhit who is the national team manager.

Adamson University tried to turn the match’s complexion in the second set by threatenibng at 22-23, but Josafat scored an off-the-block kill from the back row before Culabat nailed a push shot for the 2-0 advantage.

UE pounded the Falcons in the attacking department, 54-35, in the match that lasted one hour and 22 minutes.

Red Warriors skipper Ralph Imperial tossed 20 excellent sets while Giles Torres and JP Mangahis tallied 10 points apiece.

No Falcon reached double figures in scoring with Evander Novillo, Josh Magalaman, Jude Aguilar and Francis Casas getting eight points each.
