Practical applications emerge as 5G sites increase

In our last column, we talked about how the release of the Xiaomi POCO M3 5G will usher in the era of affordable 5G smartphones. A couple of days later, the brand quickly followed it up with the Redmi Note 10 5G.

If our sources are correct, we can expect similar-price offerings from other brands like realme in the coming weeks.

Besides its 5G capability, the Redmi Note 10 5G has a 6.5” AdaptiveSync DotDisplay with a 90Hz refresh rate capable of adjusting to content automatically; a solid triple camera system with 48 MP main camera, 2 MP macro camera and 2 MP depth sensor, a MediaTek Dimensity 700 processor and a 5,000 mAh battery that supports 18W fast charging.

The Redmi Note 10 5G comes in two variants: a 4GB+128GB priced at P9,990, and an 8GB+128GB that will retail for P11,490. It’s just a bit higher than the POCO M3 5G but is still way below the P20K range of earlier 5G handsets.

As 5G devices become accessible to more people, we are also beginning to see more practical applications of the technology.

In health care, for example, the Covid-19 outbreak has made people cautious, or even afraid of going to the hospital for their doctor’s appointment. This is a problematic scenario for the elderly and those who have medical conditions.

The pandemic has highlighted the advantages telemedicine has to offer, and has served as the push many health systems needed to implement widely across these institutions. Telemedicine is a subset of telehealth which refers to a direct interaction between a health-care provider and the patient, and includes a variety of tools and technology resources that effectively deliver care.

With the various benefits available to each participating party, more providers are now offering telehealth to monitor their patient’s conditions without putting them at risk by attending medical setting.

Telemedicine services are even more crucial for dialysis patients, like Elena Camson who live in faraway rural areas. Camson, who was diagnosed with end-stage renal disease three years ago, said she used to walk to a neighboring barangay just to catch a ride to the clinic and travel 23 kilometers from Linut-od to reach Argao for her check-ups when there was still no signal in her town.

Dr. Stanley Caminero, Argao’s community doctor, said a strong network is a huge help especially for telemedicine. Instead of traveling to town, his patients like Camson, can consult virtually via Smart 5G.

5G enables the transmission of high-quality video, allowing doctors like him to immediately understand what their patients are trying to say so they can be assured of quality service and accurate diagnosis.

Mario G. Tamayo, head of technology at PLDT and Smart, said more Filipinos like Camson will benefit from services such as telemedicine as they continue the accelerated 5G rollout and expand their network. As of last month, Smart Communications has fired up more than 3,000 5G sites across the country, including sites deployed in far-flung and mountainous areas, such as Barangay Linut-od in Argao, Cebu.

Continuing its big push for 5G in the country, Smart also expanded its Unli 5G offer to cover all Smart 5G sites nationwide—an unprecedented move that enables more Filipinos to enjoy Smart’s most powerful offer on its fastest technology yet.

THE NEW EVENTS NORM

BRANDS hold events to raise awareness, increase sales and build loyalty, but with the lockdown restrictions, businesses had to rethink the type of campaigns they could run.  While the lights have dimmed at on-ground events, a virtual platform created for events and brand activations has been making waves in the business community.

VEAP, which stands for Virtual Events and Activations Platform, is an online space for clients to pursue immersive and memorable brand engagement efforts that used to be done on-ground. It is a synergy of expertise in traditional below-the-line advertising, out-of-the-box thinking, and the power of digital and electronic systems to channel creative engineering for meaningful connections between people and brands.

The platform can be easily accessed via a smartphone, laptop, desktop and tablet, providing a way for brands to continuously engage their consumers via the safer means while simulating or even raising the standards of experiences that used to be present in an on-ground space.

The platform is created by the Tagline Group of Cos., part of which are Oncuemedia, Inc., Five Seconds Advertising, Hey! Communications and Binary Digital Advertising, which is the platform’s developer.

“It’s all about reengineering brand experiences for multi-dimensional engagements in the digital landscape—a calculated modification of our services toward the behavioral shifts taking place across all market segments due to the pandemic,” said Tagline president and owner Jovy Rabelas.
