SURIGAO CITY (21 July 2023) – In a commendable display of vigilance and dedication to duty, Port Policer Officer III Almira Olayvar, alongside the National Veterinary Quarantine Services (NVQS) personnel, successfully intercepted and confiscated 21 heads of Avian (Fighting Cocks) at the entrance of the Port of Surigao Passenger Terminal Building for lack of proper documentation, raising suspicions of illegal trafficking.
Following the confiscation, the contraband was handed over to PPOI Edamar Senados, who then assisted in its proper disposal and burning at the National Veterinary Quarantine Services Office located in Penaranda Street, Barangay Taft, Surigao City.
The decision to burn the illegal goods came as a necessary measure to minimize the risk of avian-borne diseases and maintain the health and safety of the region’s avian population.
The Port of Surigao Passenger Terminal Building, being a significant entry point for goods and passengers, has been under increased scrutiny by authorities in recent months. The collaborative effort between the PMO’s Port Police Division and NVQS personnel demonstrates the effectiveness of inter-agency cooperation to combat the trafficking of illegally transported animals.
The Port Management Office of Surigao underscores the importance of public awareness and cooperation in curbing illegal wildlife trade and urges citizens to report any suspicious activities related to the illegal transport of animals or wildlife products.
