American animal rights organization, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals or simply PETA was one of the first groups to pay tribute to former President Benigno S. Aquino III following news of his demise Thursday, June 4.

In a statement sent to BusinessMirror, PETA Senior Vice President Jason Baker said, “Former President Benigno Aquino III was one of the few leaders to take Mali the elephant’s suffering at the Manila Zoo seriously and he will be missed by everyone at PETA. In Aquino’s honor, we ask that Mali be transferred to a sanctuary where she can be given a chance at freedom.”

PETA has also underscored that its motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours for entertainment.”
