This is the current public health situation in Dinagat Islands, particularly on the doctor to population ratio.
The World Health Organization prescribes a 1:1,000 doctor–population ratio, meaning there should be at least 1 doctor for every 1,000 people. In Dinagat Islands, we have a 1:8,477 ratio. We only have 1 doctor for every 8,477 Dinagatnons.
Because of this, access to care and treatment is difficult. This is why we are very strict when it comes to our COVID-19 prevention protocols. If we come to a point when there is COVID-19 transmission in Dinagat Islands, we may not be able to sufficiently handle it due to our lack of health care personnel and facilities. We only have 3 district hospitals—all of which are not fully functioning hospitals, meaning they lack enough personnel, equipment, beds, and other essential health care components.
Almost all of our Municipal Health Officers are from the Doctors to the Barrios program. They are volunteers who finished their medical studies in reputable institutions from all over the country.
We may be lacking in terms of health care personnel, but as have shown since the beginning of the pandemic, our communities are also our frontlines. We are all front liners. We protect each other. This is why Dinagat Islands is one of the four remaining provinces without any reported cases of COVID-19 infection. Let us continue the partnership between the Provincial Government, the Municipal Governments, the national agencies, and most especially, the people. We will get through this.
