He said the establishment of the acute stroke unit represents a major advancement in the hospital’s ability to handle stroke cases.
“The opening of this unit marks a substantial leap forward in our capacity to treat one of the leading causes of disability and death in our country,” he added.
Stroke remains a major health concern in the region, ranking as the third leading cause of death in Bicol from 2019 to 2020, according to Dr. Lynne Lourdes Lucena, head of the Neurosurgery Section and Brain and Spine Center.
The newly opened facility features a brain attack team that provides immediate medical responses for stroke patients, including 24/7 emergency care, clot-busting medication, and endovascular stroke interventions.
Raborar emphasized the urgency of seeking medical attention for stroke symptoms, stating that patients should be taken to the hospital within four hours to improve survival and recovery chances.
“You have four hours. Bring the patient to us so they can receive medication and improve their chances for a better outcome,” he said.
Lucena added that this initial period is the “golden period” for effective treatment.
For 61-year-old stroke survivor Delia Lucido, the program offers hope to many families, especially those who may struggle with hospital costs.
“Thank you very much for the acute stroke unit. It is closer, and best of all, it is free,” Lucido expressed.
