In compliance with the order of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” R. Marcos, Jr. to address the problem of license plates for motor vehicles, the Land Transportation Office (LTO), under the leadership of Atty. Vigor D. Mendoza II, and under the guidance of Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Vince Dizon, finally wiped out the backlog which hounded the government for a decade.

The LTO ramped up plate production in the past two years and as of June 30 this year, the license plates produced was a total of 18,578,612 plates which effectively solved the backlog that piled up since 2014.

“We are elated and excited to announce that your LTO was able to comply with the commitment to President Ferdinand “Bongbong” R. Marcos, Jr. that there will be no backlog for both motorcycle and four-wheel vehicles plates by June 2025,” said acting Assistant Secretary and LTO Chief, Atty. Greg G. Pua.

“To borrow a quote from our LTO Chief, Asec Mendoza: ‘Sa Bagong Pilipinas, lahat may plaka na’,” he added.

It was Asec Mendoza who made the commitment to President Marcos during a meeting last year at the Malacañan Palace to address the license plate backlog after the Chief Executive assured of providing all the necessary support system.

With the assurance of support, Asec Mendoza told President Marcos that the license plate backlog will be wiped out by June 2025.

“The President’s instruction was clear: Fast-track the plate production to address the problem and that we should not disappoint the Filipino people,” said Asec Mendoza was quoted saying after the meeting.

“On the last day of June 2025, we were able to comply with our commitment by producing a total of 8,578,612 that includes both backlogs and current plate requirements,” said Pua for his part.

The figure covers 11,815,068 motorcycle plates and 6,763,544 (which equates to 3,381,772 pairs) motor vehicle plates.

“This significant accomplishment, which surpassed the expectations of everybody, is a team effort, with the dedication and perseverance of our Plate Making Plant,” said Pua.

The license plate backlog started in 2014, and worsened by a number of factors that resulted in the accumulation of millions of plates for both motorcycles and four-wheel cars.

And with this gargantuan task of addressing plate backlog completed, Pua said they are now embarking on the full-blown delivery of the license plates to all motorists affected by the backlog.

“On behalf of the men and women of the Team LTO, we express gratitude to our very supportive President Marcos na talagang tinutukan na malutas na itong problema ito and to Secretary Dizon sa kanyang mahahalagang inputs upang lalo pang mapabilis ang pagresolba sa problemang ito,” said Pua.

“And with this task finally completed, we assure our millions of clients that we will also fast-track the process of delivery and will continue to find ways to do so,” he added.

As of the latest data, more than seven million plates were already distributed to the rightful owners. #
