The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office V – Bicol Region responded promptly and decisively to a fire that displaced eight families comprising 50 individuals in Zone 1, Barangay Poblacion, Del Gallego, Camarines Sur, in the early hours of Wednesday, May 14, 2025.
According to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), the fire ignited around 1:30 a.m., engulfing eight homes constructed mostly of light materials, which accelerated the spread of the blaze.
While no injuries or fatalities were reported, the affected families are currently taking temporary shelter at the barangay hall.
Acting under the directive of DSWD Bicol Regional Director Norman Laurio, the Disaster Response Management Division (DRMD) was swiftly mobilized to deliver immediate relief. Each family received two Family Food Packs and hygiene kits, with the total assistance amounting to over PHP 32,642.
Understanding the emotional impact of such incidents, DSWD social workers will administer Psychological First Aid, particularly focusing on children and other vulnerable individuals. Furthermore, each family will receive PHP 10,000 in financial support through the Department’s Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations (AICS) program.
In support of long-term recovery, Project Development Officers from the Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP) conducted on-site assessments to identify potential livelihood opportunities for the fire survivors.
Under the leadership of Secretary Rex Gatchalian, the DSWD remains steadfast in its mission to provide rapid, compassionate, and inclusive aid to those affected by disasters ensuring that no one is left behind.
