The City Government of Iriga honored the rich heritage and contributions of the Agta community through the celebration of “Agta sa Iriga: Pagtaong Respeto saka Pagcecelebrar ka Kandang Kultura” (An Indigenous Peoples Day Celebration) held on October 25, 2025, at the Iriga City Sports Center.
Anchored on the theme “Weaving Culture, Enriching Future: Empowering Indigenous Communities as Bedrock of Sustainable Development,” the event gathered Indigenous Peoples (IPs) from various barangays in a day filled with cultural presentations, traditional games, livelihood exhibits, and dialogue with Mayor Rex.
Vice Mayor Edsel S. Dimaiwat formally opened the celebration with his welcome address, recognizing the IPs as integral partners in the city’s growth and cultural identity. City Councilor Jor-el Caayao and Bishop Ros Orolfo also graced the occasion and joined the day-long activities.
Mayor Rex C. Oliva, in his message of solidarity, underscored the city government’s continuing support for the Indigenous Peoples, emphasizing the importance of inclusion and respect as foundations of sustainable development. He also presented the city’s accomplishments and ongoing programs for the IP sector, highlighting initiatives that promote access to education, livelihood support, and social protection.
Highlight of the celebration was the “I-Unga Ta Ki Mayor” or IP Hour, where members of the Indigenous community were given the opportunity to directly raise their concerns and questions to Mayor Oliva. Issues brought up were immediately addressed during the open forum, reflecting the administration’s commitment to responsive and participatory governance.
The city government also extended assistance to 352 IP households, each receiving one sack of rice, while all chieftains were granted an additional ₱1,000 cash aid as a token of recognition for their leadership and service to their respective communities.
The event opened with an Indigenous ritual and cultural performances by the LGU Folkloric Dancetroupe, Iriga Saring Tinig Youth Choir, and IP Children’s Choir, followed by literacy and spoken word presentations, musical and dance showcases, and an Indigenous Lunch (Boodle Fight) featuring native cuisine where Mayor Rex and Atty. Maharlika Ramon C. Oaferina II joined the lunch.
An IP Handicraft Exhibit displayed traditional tools, art, and products made by local artisans, while Indigenous Games (Laro ng Lahi) such as bataka, turubigan, and baribadan sa bola (lukoy) highlighted the community’s vibrant traditions and sense of camaraderie.
The celebration concluded with an Awards and Recognition ceremony honoring the accomplishments of IP leaders and organizations, capped by a Solidarity Dance (Rinampo) symbolizing unity among all sectors.
The activity was spearheaded by the Iriga City Culture, Heritage, Arts and Tourism Office (ICCHATO) under the leadership of Engr. Nona Vanessa M. Santiago, in collaboration with partner agencies and local IP organizations.
Through the annual IP Day celebration, the City Government of Iriga reaffirms its commitment to preserve cultural heritage and empower Indigenous communities as vital partners in the city’s inclusive growth and sustainable development.
