The 425-strong delegation from Iriga City is all set and geared up for the upcoming 2024 Palarong Bicol. Comprising 333 student-athletes, along with coaches and chaperones, they are in high spirits, ready to showcase their skills and talents in the competition. To ensure the team’s readiness, a pre-departure meeting was held last April 26, 2024 at the Iriga City Sports Complex.

During the meeting, team officials, coaches, and student-athletes discussed the tournament’s schedule, rules, and travel arrangements. Mayor Rex C. Oliva was also present, delivering inspiring words to all in attendance, alongside City Administrator Atty. Maharlika Ramon C. Oaferina II and Executive Secretary Jor-el O. Caayao.

Mayor Rex emphasized the importance of sportsmanship and camaraderie, echoing the cherished Irigueño virtue: “Diri basta nagpapadaog,” reflecting the indomitable spirit ingrained in every athlete. He reiterated that participation is more important than winning, reminding them, “What is important in a competition is not to win, but to take part.” His words resonated deeply, emphasizing life’s true essence lying in the valiant struggles faced along the way.

Ensuring the athletes’ well-being, Mayor Rex provided cash allowances and medical kits to delegates, considering it not just a duty but a responsibility.

To offer prayers for the athletes’ safety and success, a Holy Mass was also held after the pre-departure meeting. The spiritual gathering served as a moment of reflection and unity, bringing together athletes, coaches, officials, and supporters in prayerful solidarity.

Irigueños are encouraged to come out and show their support for their athletes as they compete in the 2024 Palarong Bicol. The games will be held in various venues in Ligao City, Oas, Tabaco City, and Legazpi City from April 28 to May 4, 2024.
