Fighting Maroons stave off Tigers for 11-2 record in UAAP hoops

UNIVERSITY of the Philippines (UP) needed a huge second half to fend off upset-seeking University of Santo Tomas (UST), 78-60, in University Athletic Association of the Philippine Season 85 men’s basketball action at the SM Mall of Asia Arena on Wednesday.

The Fighting Maroons improved to 11-2 won-lost to secure at least a playoff for a twice-to-beat advantage in the Final Four.

The Growling Tigers were in the hunt when they trailed by three points midway the third quarter but JD Cagulangan and Cyril Gonzales pushed UP ahead entering the final period, 59-49.

Cagulangan, Carl Tamayo, RC Calimag and Gonzales then conspired in an 11-0 UP run for a commanding 70-49 advantage with seven minutes remaining.

Tamayo led UP with 19 points and nine rebounds while Gonzales chipped in 14 points. Malick Diouf had a complete game of 10 points, 14 rebounds, six assists, two steals and a block for all 15 Fighting Maroons who who were fielded in the game.

Nic Cabañero paced UST with 14 points and seven rebounds while Adama Faye had 12 points and 11 rebounds.

The Growling Tigers absorbed their 11th straight loss to sink to 1-11.
