PRESIDENT Duterte expressed condolences with the family of former President Benigno “Noynoy” S. Aquino III and issued Proclamation No. 1169 declaring June 24, 2021 to July 3, 2021 as a Period of National Mourning over the passing of the republic’s 15th president.

During the 10-day period, the national flag shall be flown at half-mast from sunrise to sunset on all government buildings and installations throughout the Philippines and abroad.

The government is ready to extend assistance to the family of Aquino, who passed at 6:30 a.m. on Thursday (June 24).

“I offer my heartfelt condolences to the Aquino family. Be assured of the government’s assistance in this period of mourning and, above all, please accept the love and the prayers of a grateful nation,” President Duterte said during his speech at the ceremonial signing of several laws.

Aquino died from renal disease secondary to diabetes, and was undergoing dialysis.

Durterte said he hopes the former chief executive’s service to the country will continue to inspire other Filipinos to do the same.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) also lamented the death of Aquino, whom it considered as  a supporter of several Church initiatives.

“We remember too, with gratitude, the role and participation he and his administration played in ensuring the success of the Canonization of Blessed Pedro Calungsod in 2012, the Apostolic Visit of Pope Francis in 2015, and the 51 st International Eucharistic Congress in Cebu City in 2016,” CBCP President and Davao Archbishop Romulo Valles said in a statement.

CBCP offered prayers for Aquino’s family, friends and colleagues, who are mourning his passing.

“We commend his soul to our Heavenly Father, confident in His mercy and love,” Valles said.
