In a bid to help the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and local government units (LGUs) improve their productivity, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) IX has approved four (4) projects in Zamboanga del Norte amounting to ₱ 4.6-Million.

These projects, funded through the agency’s Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP), focus on helping the beneficiaries acquire the necessary technologies to upgrade their current operations. The beneficiaries include three MSMEs, Tenepre Abaca Trading, F.A. Apuli Poultry Farm, Engr’s Steel Industry, and LGU Sirawai.

Tenepre Abaca Trading is a Siocon-based Abaca Fiber Processor. The firm started their business employing manual process in abaca stripping which made it difficult for them to meet their buyer’s requirements. With SETUP assistance amounting to ₱ 370,000, the firm is acquiring two units of abaca decorticating machines and three units of abaca stripping machines. Each unit of equipment can process up to 120 kg of dried abaca fiber per day, increasing 400% in production output compared to manual processing.

In addition, F.A. Apuli Poultry Farm is the main supplier of egg in the municipality of Siocon. The firm is upgrading its egg grading process by acquiring egg grading machine worth ₱ 380,000. The new equipment will enable the firm to hasten egg grading from a usual five hours in manual process to less than an hour.

Similarly, Engr’s Steel Industry, one of Dipolog City’s home-grown steel fabricator, aims to continue upgrading their production process through mechanization. In their old practice, they realized that manual production of roll up door accessories is laborious, prone to defect and heavily dependent on the availability of materials from their suppliers. With SETUP assistance amounting to ₱ 2.5-Million, the firm is acquiring one-unit bottom bar making machine and one-unit spring roll making machine. These pieces of equipment are necessary to enable the firm to fabricate their own roll-up doors.

Meanwhile, LGU-Sirawai is acquiring bioreactor and shredder to improve their solid waste management program. These technologies, developed by DOST’s Industrial Technology Development Institute (DOST-ITDI), convert biodegradable waste into organic compost. The total assistance to LGU-Sirawai is
₱ 1.35-Million.

To date, DOST-IX through SETUP has funded a total of 114 projects in Zamboanga del Norte amounting closed to ₱ 100-Million. (OIC Lyza Bautista, RPN DXKD Dipolog)
