DENR Zamboanga Peninsula together with the different national government agencies, local government units (LGUs), law enforcement agencies, academic institutions, and other stakeholders join the nation in the fight for a Trash-Free Seas in the observance of this year’s International Coastal Clean Up. This activity aims to promote waste reduction, recycling and upcycling and create public awareness on proper waste management and other environmental concerns.
Some of the most common marine debris collected includes plastic, cigarette butts, plastic bags, baby diapers, food wrappers and packaging, shampoo and coffee sachets, styrofoam, fishing nets, among others.
In the coastline of Pagadian City, some 2000 volunteers were able to collect a total of 51 metric tons of trash.
Clean up sites also include coastlines in Dipolog City, Manukan, Sindangan, Manuel Roxas in Zamboanga Del Norte and Margosatubig in Zamboanga Del Sur.
The spirit of Bayanihan is very much alive through working together as a community to achieve a common goal in preserving and protecting our oceans and waterways.
