DFA echoes UNSC call to release Suu Kyi, Win Myint

THE Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) welcomed the UN Security Council’s “strong support for Asean’s positive and constructive role in facilitating a peaceful solution in support of the people of Myanmar.” The DFA, in a statement issued on Monday, echoed the Council’s call for the “release of all those arbitrarily detained, including State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint”. 

The DFA also expressed support for the work of Christine Schraner Burgener, Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General on Myanmar. 

On April 30, the Council was briefed by Minister of Foreign Affairs II Dato Erywan Pehin Yusof of Brunei Darussalam, as Chair of Asean, on the outcomes of the recent Asean Leaders’ Meeting on Myanmar. The Members of the Council welcomed the convening of the Asean Leaders’ Meeting on April 24 in Indonesia, as well as the Chairman’s Statement and the “Five-Point Consensus.”

The Special Envoy of the Secretary-General on Myanmar also briefed the Council. The members of the council underlined their full support for the work of the Special Envoy and welcomed her ongoing visit to the region. They encouraged complementarity of her work to the work of Asean, and hoped she would visit Myanmar as soon as possible.

The press briefing was presided by Viet Nam, as President of the Security Council for April.
