Davao City – The province’s Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) is tasked to play a key role in promoting the KAAGAPAY food sufficiency program of the provincial government.

Emerson Dave Silutan, Chairperson of the Davao del Norte SK Federation, revealed this in today’s Network Briefing News with Communications Sec. Martin Andanar.

Meaning Kawsa sa Agrikultura ug Panginabihian sa Barangay, the KAAGAPAY program is Gov. Edwin I Jubahib’s flagship program aiming for food security in each household through provision of seedlings and livestock in order for them to grow and produce their own food products.

The produce may then be used for the producer’s personal consumption or sold through the KAAGAPAY’s marketing aid. Silutan explained the SK’s involvement with the program.

“The SKs are encouraged and tasked by the provincial government to participate in the implementation of the said program through promotion and production,” he said.

In the promotion involvement, Silutan said that the social media will be used to encourage involvement among the youth.

“We believe that the SKs and the youth of today are the common audience of the social media. So we will be using the social media to share and promote this program. To raise awareness, to raise the willingness to give action,” he explained.

In addition, the SKs will also be involved with the actual work and production.

“It is not enough to share something or promote something on social media if we are not participating. So if we are promoting to our youth about planting vegetables, then we will be participating in the vegetable planting too,” Silutan said.

SK Davao del Norte actively promotes KAAGAPAY Program online aside from orienting members at LGU levels.  They view KAAGAPAY as an effective mean of encouraging the youth to consider the value and income-earning opportunities of farming.

They have also staged a donation drive called “Appeal for Papel”. Through this, they aim to generate supplies of A4 bond papers from private, public and civic organizations and offices to assist public schools identified by DepEd Davao del Norte Schools Division to have been lacking supplies and needing support.

As well, they work to institutionalize online means of informing, educating and communicating with and for the youth.
