Compostela Valley Holds Forum On Safety Of Writers And Journalists

Davao City- More than 80 media practitioners and information officers on Tuesday participated in the Media Security Forum held in this capital town of Compostela Valley.

The forum was the highlight of the Strength and Convergence Assembly for Media and Information Officers conducted by the provincial government of Compostela Valley.

During the forum, lawyer Abraham Agamata, chief of staff of the Presidential Task Force on Media Security, urged the members of the press to report threats on their live in relation to their work as journalists.

“Kung may sinulat kayong balita (If you have written a news story) and you were unjustly persecuted for it, just report it to our office,” Agamata said.  “We will take proper actions.”

According to the data from the task force, Davao ranks second to Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao in terms of the number of media killings in the regions.

Agamata attributed the media killings to politics, corruption and the vulnerability of the media themselves.

For his part, Compostela Valley Governor Jayvee Tyron Uy advised the media to focus only on the issues and exclude the personal lives of those involved in the controversy.
