City Government of Surigao celebrates National Indigenous People’s Thanksgiving Day

In a vibrant celebration of cultural heritage, the City Government of Surigao, through its City Tourism and Cultural Affairs Office, marked National Indigenous People’s Thanksgiving Day today, October 30, 2024, at Taft National High School as part of the 2024 Indigenous People’s Month and the 27th anniversary of the Indigenous People’s Rights Act (IPRA).

Under the theme “Valuing, Nurturing, and Honoring Indigenous Peoples and Indigenous Knowledge,” the two-day event focuses on raising awareness, respect, and support for the Badjau and Mamanwa communities. The celebration features unique activities aimed at sharing Indigenous knowledge and traditions with the public.

The program, dedicated to the Badjau community, showcased a Badjau Product Booth Display and Recycle Boat Making activity, highlighting the community’s skills, artistry, and aspirations.

Present at the celebration were City Councilor Joshua Emilio Geli, Local Youth Development Officer Atty. Krystel Grace Buniel, IPED Focal Person Marino Pamugas, NCIP Service Center Head Andrew Salas, Canlanipa Central Elementary School Principal Maricar Lisondra, Taft National High School Principal Manuel Dayondon, Barangay Canlanipa Captain Joel Cambalon, Brgy. Taft Councilor Jun Prada, and members of the Surigao City Culture and Arts Council.

The City of Surigao remains committed to empowering its Indigenous communities, fostering a society where diversity is respected and cultural heritage is preserved.
