Laoag City, Ilocos Norte – The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) station in Ilocos Norte is warning the public on the potential dangers of high heat index this month.

According to PAGASA, the index measures the difficulty the body endures in cooling down itself naturally when it is hot and humid.

In the forecast of the weather bureau for April 2, Ilocos Sur may experience 39 degree Celsius, Laoag City in Ilocos Norte with 40 degree Celsius, Pangasinan with 40 degree Celsius, and Batac City in Ilocos Norte with 39 degree Celsius.

In the classification of PAGASA, the forecast temperatures fall under the extreme caution level wherein heat cramps and heat exhaustion are possible, and continuing activity could lead to heat stroke.

Cynthia Iglesia, officer-in-charge of PAGASA Ilocos Norte Station, advises the public to be careful when going outside, especially when the heat index is high.

She shares the following safety tips:
Limit the time spent outdoors;
Drink plenty of water;
Avoid tea, coffee, soda, and liquor;
Use umbrella. Wear hats and sleeved clothing outdoors;
Schedule heavy activities for the beginning or end of the day when it is cooler.

Moreover, she also informs the public to be aware of potential warning signs due to high heat such as sweating heavily, exhaustion or fatigue, dizziness or light headedness, blacking out or feeling dizzy when standing, weak but fast pulse, feeling of nausea, and vomiting.

“It is important that we all have to stay hydrated and take necessary precautions to be safe and healthy as temperatures rise,” said Iglesia. (Ma. Joreina Therese Blanco)
