The Department of Health (DOH) in Ilocos Region has raised a code white alert from April 13 to 20 in all the hospitals and health facilities in the region for the observance of Holy Week.

“All health facilities and all medical personnel, especially those in emergency rooms and critical care units, are ready and prepared to respond to a potential increase in patient volume due to accidents, injuries, or other health-related incidents that may arise during the Lenten season,” DOH Ilocos said on Wednesday.

It said the DOH will closely monitor health events and coordinate with regional and local health facilities to ensure a synchronized and efficient response to emergencies.

The alert status is part of its preparations for any health-related incidents that may arise during this period.

DOH Ilocos regional director Paula Paz Sydiongco reminded residents who will be going home to their provinces and tourists who will be spending their vacation to ensure a healthy and safe observance of the Holy Week and the summer vacation (SumVac) in the region.

“Semana Santa is one of the longest holidays in the country and it is a
popular time for family gatherings and visiting significant places. It is important to plan and be ready for safe travel and Holy Week celebration with family,” Sydiongco said.

Sydiongco enumerated tips on how everyone can stay safe and healthy during this Lenten season such as drinking lots of water to prevent dehydration and heatstroke, especially now that some areas in the provinces are experiencing massive heat indices, and limiting sun exposure.

“Use an umbrella when sun exposure is unavoidable and avoid wearing dark-colored clothes as it attracts heat instead wear bright comfortable clothing,” she said.
