BACOLOD CITY – The City Health Office has confirmed the second leptospirosis-related death in Bacolod this year, occurring three months after the first fatality.
Dr. Grace Tan, head of the CHO Environmental Sanitation Division, said the latest victim was a 47-year-old man from Barangay Banago.
The man had been fetching water for neighbors when he began experiencing symptoms, including four days of body malaise, without seeking medical attention.
He developed jaundice and fever a day before hospitalization, and by the time he was admitted on April 18, seizures had already set in.
Tan said the man was hospitalized due to upward rolling of his eyeballs and died two days later.
As of April 26, the city has recorded six leptospirosis cases—two from Barangay Banago and one each from Barangays 1, Villamonte, Mansilingan and Estefania.
This reflects a 25 percent drop compared to the same period last year, which recorded eight cases and two deaths.
The first death this year was reported on Jan. 25—a 52-year-old drainage cleaner from Barangay Villamonte. (Glazyl Jopson via tdg)
