Bacolod City – Hog repopulation was halted in San Enrique, Negros Occidental, due to the recurrence of hog cholera, Mayor Jilson Tubillara disclosed recently.

This was a result of backyard hog raisers reporting deaths of sentinel hogs, as the municipality started the repopulation of pigs, Tubillara said.

Based on reports of the Provincial Veterinarian Office, San Enrique was the local government unit hardest hit by hog cholera in 2023, where 99 percent of its hog population died.

While the laboratory results indicated that hog deaths were not caused by ASF (African Swine Fever), Tubillara said the symptoms of hog cholera are similar to ASF.

Classical swine fever (CSF), also known as hog cholera, is a contagious viral disease of domestic and wild swine.

With this development, Tubillara said the municipal government has prepared other livelihood opportunities for affected hog raisers in the town.

The mayor said that Cauayan town is currently their source of pork supply.

As of October 2, the Bureau of Animal Industry has reported active ASF cases in two barangays of Bago City in Negros Occidental. (Gilbert Bayoran via tvds)
