Bacolod City – An ordinance giving honor and tribute to deceased war veterans of Bacolod City by establishing a war memorial monument, was passed on first reading by the Sangguniang Panlungsod of Bacolod City recently.

Authored by Councilor Wilson Gamboa Jr., the ordinance said R.A. 10066, or the National Cultural Heritage Act of 2009, provides a comprehensive framework for the protection and conservation of the Philippine’s cultural heritage, including monuments.

The primary purpose of the stated law regarding monuments in the Philippines is to protect and preserve the national cultural heritage of the country through recognizing and honoring the significant achievements, events, and figures in Philippine history, it said.

Through giving honor and tribute to all war veterans, and memorializing their heroic deeds, helps the city and the Philippines in promoting citizenry to love and serve the country, the ordinance said.

The proposed ordinance to be known as the “War Veterans Memorial Monument Ordinance,” mandates the Office of the Mayor to request a confirmation from the Office of the Armed Forces of the Philippines as to records of service to the country, which includes those constituents of Bacolod City recorded in the United States War Memorial for World War II veterans.

To ensure the availability of funds necessary to carry out the intent and purposes of this ordinance, an amount of P1 million must be allocated, it said. (Chrysee Semillano via tvds)
