Surigao: Completed road widening helps in the recovery of Odette-torn Siargao

Seeing the difficulty of a narrow road during relief operations after the onslaught of Super Typhoon Odette, the Department of Public Works and Highways Surigao del Norte 1st District Engineering Office completed on June 22, 2022, the off-carriageway improvement along the Jct. National Road-Antipolo-Tuboran-Quezon-Mabini Road in Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte.

With the road shoulder and line canal concreted, the existing two-lane road is widened to accommodate bigger volume of traffic and also clears the right-of-way farther for safety and easy maneuver of both travellers and residents along the road.

The project was started on February 23, 2022 and has a total length of 1,162 meters. The project cost a total of Php15,880,893.95.

“We don’t want to experience again the difficulty of accessing our kababayans when calamities hit because our roads were narrow and blocked with debris,” said District Engineer Alex B. Ramos.

He said that DPWH is prioritizing the improvement of all national roads so that the island can recover fast both from COVID-19 and the devastation of Odette especially the tourism industry of the island.

Siargao is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the country because of the so many attractions on the island aside from surfing and fishing competitions. Recently, tourism is opened and businesses is starting to come back.
