ZAMBOANGA: ZC HONORS WWII HEROES AT 84TH ARAW NG KAGITINGAN RITES

    Mayor Khymer Adan Olaso led the commemoration of the 84th Araw ng Kagitingan on Wednesday, April 9, 2026, at Rizal Park and the Freedom Fighters Memorial Shrine Plaza, marking his first time to attend the event as City Mayor.

    The ceremony, held at 7:00 AM, included a wreath-laying and a 21-gun salute to honor the courage and sacrifice of Filipino and American soldiers who fought during World War II. It also formed part of the Philippine Veterans Week 2026 with the theme “Giting ng Bayani, Pamana sa Salinlahi.” A parade, dubbed “Lakad Kalayaan,” participated by the security sector, kicked off the event at 6am.

    Joining the mayor were Vice Mayor Beng Climaco, Chief of Staff Celso Lobregat, City Administrator Percival Ramos, city councilors, Regional Director PBGEN Edwin A. Quilates, representatives from the Armed Forces of the Philippines, United States Marines, Bureau of Fire Protection, Bureau of Corrections, Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, Zamboanga City Police Office led by City Director PCOL Fidel B. Fortaleza Jr., as well as other local government officials and employees.

    In his message, Mayor Olaso emphasized the enduring legacy of heroism and patriotism of Filipino soldiers, noting that their courage in the face of adversity remains a powerful symbol of the nation’s strength. He called on the community to uphold the spirit of valor in everyday life through service, integrity, and dedication to the country.
