Mayor Khymer Olaso stresses the city government’s strong commitment to maintaining peace and order as he strongly condemns the recent massacre at Sitio Mangga Bolong and a separate shooting incident in Barangay Talisayan, emphasizing that violence has no place in Zamboanga City.
Speaking during the regular flag-raising ceremony at City Hall Monday morning, March 2, Mayor Olaso extended his deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims of the February 27 incident at Sitio Mangga Bolong. Authorities said the case reportedly stemmed from a personal dispute.
“That is totally unacceptable in our city. Yan massacre con el familia. Why? Because of land dispute, or other things,” the mayor said, denouncing the act.
He confirmed that the suspect in the Mangga Bolong incident has surrendered to authorities and assured that the public that a thorough and impartial investigation is being conducted to ensure accountability and prevent similar incidents.
The local chief executive also cited a separate shooting incident in Barangay Talisayan last Saturday night, February 28 where the suspect has also been placed behind bars. He emphasized the importance of sustained vigilance, stronger police presence, and active community cooperation to preserve peace and order.
Meanwhile, Olaso lauded Second District Congressman Kap. Jerry “Totong” Perez and local police units for intensified anti-crime operations, particularly against illegal drugs, solvent abuse, robbery and other focus crimes. He noted that continued police visibility and community-based initiatives have contributed to crime prevention efforts.
He concluded by calling for unity and cooperation among government agencies and the public, especially during the observance of the holy month of Ramadan, stressing that maintaining peace and security remains a shared responsibility.
The flag ceremony was also highlighted by the oath-taking of newly-appointed OCENR Department Head Gerry Pollisco, recognition of barangays and health districts that recorded the highest coverage of anti-measles and rubella vaccination during the MR-SIA implementation January 19 to February 20 and the presentation of a certificate of commendation to the City Social Welfare Office led by Maria Socorro Rojas for decisive actoion and commitment to public service that caused the arrest of 11 individuals found to have submitted falsified documents in their request for financial assistance from the local government.
Among those present during the ceremony were representatives from the Department of Health (DOH-9) Zamboanga City Office, Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO), city department heads and employees, and members of the local media. Arvin Midel)
