The Zamboanga del Sur COVID-19 Task Force welcomed a 14-day breather for frontliners due to the suspension of domestic flights in Metro Manila after the national capital reverted to MECQ, Tuesday, August 4, 2020.

Provincial Tourism Officer and Balik-Probinsya Sub Task Group Chairperson Atty. Jihan Bana said that the cancellation of flights would mean a temporary relief, at least, for the frontliners who are assigned daily at the Pagadian City Airport.

“Our Balik-Probinsya staff can now take a rest from their demanding task especially that Pagadian Airport accommodates two (2) flights every other day with an average of a hundred passengers per arrival which are either locally stranded individuals or returning overseas workers,” Bana said.

She added that almost 50% of the arriving passengers in the local airport are not Zambosur residents and they’re having a hard time monitoring the said people especially when LGU’s fail to fetch them on time.

“There are some LSI’s who are not transported immediately back to their respective provinces and some would pass by at restaurants in Pagadian so the city government here have taken the initiative to send them to the borders so they can go home,” Bana explained.

According to Bana, the flight suspension would also lessen the workload of the task force and can divert their time and effort in handling the arrival of LSI’s from Cebu since the travel ban there was also lifted Tuesday.

Governor Victor Yu has given instruction to strengthen the borders of the province as more stranded individuals traveling by land and sea are expected to arrive while flights are temporarily put on hold.

The Provincial Task Force will use the 2-week break in air travel to bolster the implementation of COVID-19 minimum health standards and re-evaluate existing guidelines while doing its mandate to provide a better crisis response for Zamboanga del Sur.
