Mayor John Dalipe said his administration stands in solidarity with the Muslim community in Zamboanga City in observance of Ramadan, a sacred and spiritual season, and asked everyone to offer sincere prayers and support those facing challenges and hardships.

In a statement read for him by City Hall Spokesperson Liza Jocson during Tuesday’s press briefing, Dalipe said his administration is one with the Muslim community as they observe the holy month of fasting, prayers, reflection and community.

Dalipe extended his greetings to all Muslims as the start of Ramadan last March 12, per declaration of the Ulama Council of Zamboanga Peninsula.

It is believed that the first verses of Islam’s Holy Scripture, the Quran, were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (swt) during this time.

In another development, Jocson said the local chief executive has extended his profound gratitude to thousands of women, who participated in the recent “Marcha de las Mujeres,” a Purple Walk for a Cause.

The parade highlighted this year’s International Women’s Month celebration this March, which kicked off with the International Women’s Day last March 8.

Lastly, Dalipe appealed for the support and cooperation of all residents during this challenging time as Zamboanga City has been placed under a state of calamity due to severe scarcity of water supply brought about by the El Niño phenomenon.

“Now is the time to come together and do what is best for our city. Your government is doing everything possible to assist in this latest crisis,” Jocson quoted the mayor as saying.

He appealed all Zamboangueños to conserve water and help one another. “It is by coming together during this challenging time that we build a stronger and more resilient Zamboanga,” Dalipe said. (Vic Larato)
