The city government of Zamboanga under the present administration of Mayor John Dalipe has allocated close to P20 million for this year’s Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES) also known as summer job of students.
Assistant City Social Welfare and Development Officer Uldarico Fabian announced during the press briefing Tuesday that the program will have 2,321 total slots this year.
It will start from June 19 to July 14 for the first batch that will be composed of 1,222 college students, while the second batch will begin on July 17 until August 11 for the 1,099 high school students.
Each of the students, who will qualify for the summer job, will receive a salary of P11,379.00 for a 20-day work at P568.95 a day.
The program is jointly implemented by the city government and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) at 60% and 40% appropriation shares, respectively.
Thus, for this year’s 2,321 slots, the city government had allocated the amount of P19,830,939.00, representing 60% of the program’s total appropriation of P33.051 million, of which 40% or P6,709,058.40 will be paid by DOLE.
Qualified for the SPES are 15-30 years old students enrolled during the present school year/semester with passing grades, and out-of-school youths, who intend to continue their education in the incoming school year.
Likewise, the parents’ combined income should be below the poverty threshold set by the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA). Students, whose parents have been displaced or about to be displaced due to business closure or work stoppage, will also qualify for the summer job. (Vic Larato)
