The Mines and Geosciences Bureau through the Philippine Mine Safety and Environment Association (PMSEA), Board of Directors announced the Awardees last February 19, 2021. Taganito HPAL Nickel Corporation (THPAL) located in the province of Surigao Del Norte has bagged its first Presidential Mineral Industry Environmental Award and Best Mining Forest Awards under the mineral processing category for 2020.
The company has also been awarded as runners up for the safest mineral processing plant 2020. The awards were announced by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) and selection committee after much deliberation last February 19, 2021.
The Presidential Mineral Industry Environmental Award, Best Mining Forest Contest, and Safest Mines Award is an annual competition to recognize Mineral Industries who sets exemplar and outstanding levels of dedication, initiative, and innovation in the pursuit of excellence in environmental management, development of host and neighboring communities, land use improvement, exploration, and mining site rehabilitation and final decommissioning. This was officially established under Executive Order No. 399 on the 3rd of February 1997.
Despite the threat of the pandemic, the validation committee still pursued to push through with the competition. There were 18 contenders for the PMIEA Awards as endorsed by their respective regional MGB offices. Offsite validation was conducted last January 26 – February 5,2021, through online video conferencing.
THPAL is now proud to present to the whole Nation that the company deserves to gain The PMIEA. This trophy signifies that THPAL earnestly speaks for its community and its environment, along with this is the characteristics of the mining industry in sustaining wealth creation and improving the quality of life.
