NINE Filipinos headed by world’s highest obstacle course race gold medalist Elias Tabac will compete in the 2021 Spartan World Championship in Liwa Desert on December 3 to 5 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

A total of 300 obstacle athletes around the world will be tested by exhausting 30 obstacles composed of sandbag carry weighing 60 to 70 kilos, Hercules Hoist and spear throwing, among others, in the 21k race.

Tabac, 28, a government employee in the sports side office department of Tagum, Davao del Norte, said they are eyeing to get a top 10 or top 20 finish against the world’s best selection of athletes, which would definitely be a huge achievement.

“It’s going to be the selection of the best many Spartan athletes so it’s not an easy task on the desert,” Tabac told BUSINESSMIRROR on Monday, who won the gold last October in the World’s Highest Obstacle Course Race on Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa.

“You have to overcome those obstacles in the 21k race. It’s going to be difficult on my part because I am not used to competing in the road race course. I am more into climbing.”

The other Filipinos who will also be flying to Abu Dhabi on Tuesday are Mervin Guarte, Mohammad Sherwin Mangil, Jeffrey Reginio, Jose Marie de Castro, Gabb Rosario, Maritess Nocyao, Sunday Abahan and Glorien Merisco. They will be coached by Marcky Parilla and Moi Yamoyam.
